Catching up on Doctor Who with my son before the Christmas Special, I noticed something which points to the TARDIS having a hitherto perceived connection to the historic rail town of Crewe.
In "The Angels Take Manhattan" the Doctor ends up back in New York in 1938 having to work out of his way out of a seemingly unbeatable conundrum with those most terrifying of enemies, The Weeping Angels.
Shortly before emerging from the TARDIS, the Doctor remarks to River Song (outside) about having a few preparations, then grooms his hair using the reflective surface of a panel. The camera changes focus, blurs out the Doctor's reflection, then some text on the panel shows:
'TYPE FD 12 MK VII
MANUFACTURER ROLLS-ROYCE MOTORS, CREWE, ENGLAND'
Other text does show, but obviously this is the significant bit. The TARDIS is a living machine, that much we know. Its interior changes for each successive regeneration. Given it's a panel from an engine, is it saying the TARDIS has one of these engines? Is it a seldom used component? Or a mere piece of reflective junk?
Whatever the truth, it's good to see Crewe's quality manufacturing history, the Best of British and an icon of superlative work ,associated with the Best of British TV fiction.
The picture shows the moment from the episode; the time index is 20 minutes, but is actually about 18 minutes in.
The main year in the episode is 1938; this is the year Rolls Royce moved to Crewe with the production of engines commencing late in that year. The most famous engine from Crewe, The Merlin, went on to have about 27,000 units made from the town over the course of the Second World War.
Crewe's a proper Victorian town, its station brought into being a couple months after Queen Vic came to the throne. Let's hope the Doctor Who Special delivers a proper Victorian Christmas treat. The portents are promising!

Thankyou Sir Patrick Moore
I've just taken a look out at the Night Sky with tears in my eyes and on my cheeks. Orion, The Pleiades, Venus instantly recognisable to me. An amazing wondrous spectacle to marvel at.
Thanks to Sir Patrick Moore's correspondence with me about 30 years ago, my childhood love and amazement of astronomy grew and became sustained into adulthood. I am very saddened by his passing today.
As someone 'off the telly' who would send short typed letters back to me, it felt so pleasing, so encouraging to have him reply in such a sincere manner. From days before internet, with just 3 TV channels, he was the closest thing to an astronomer engaging social media for that day: the letter.
Thankyou Sir Patrick, you brought the heavens a little closer and better illuminated my understanding of astronomy. You'll be missed.

OK, Who Puked on my Plate?
Well if this was vomit, it was actually very nice to eat. It was my very first Mexican food even if it looked ghastly. Given guidance by my female companions as to what I might actually like, this chicken based dish (pollo, if I recall correct) went down a treat. My very white British palate coped admirably. Thanks to Chapala Mexican off Weaver Boulevard for a satisfying intro to different cuisine of a very different country for me.

Nice Bikes
These were the bikers I was following on this first solitary drive (as such). We'd paused at Monticello Road / Weaver Boulevard intersection in Weaverville so grabbing a shot here sealed the memory of the moment. I have a story to tell about the gas station to the rear of the picture showing how things are different in the US than the UK with fuelling. I'll get around to it at some point!

Give me a home...
...where the buffalo roam.
One of the folk connected to my visit to US was in turn connected to a buffalo ranch somewhere across the French Broad River and beyond by some way. One afternoon we took a drive out to the ranch to see the buffalo. It was first drive in the USA and I was following the motorbikes. Good fun and broke me into driving on the wrong side of the road very nicely. I adored this weather vane. It can't be too often you get a buffalo weather vane and of all the places to get one I guess a buffalo ranch is the right place.

I Just love this road name. Very me. Not sure what the history of the name is, but it's just fine. Can't think of anywhere else where I've seen 'spooks' in the road name. X-Files was here. Maybe.

Weaverville High Street at Dusk
This is how I remember Weaverville best of all. The front porch of Blue Mountain Pizza. I loved sitting on front porches of different places and homes in the evening. Not a culture we've got a Britain. Though I guess the climate's to blame!
Quietening of the evening. Light still hanging on in the blue-silver night. A peaceful moment and a vibe to cherish.

This was where we joined the live music at Blue Mountain Pizza in Weaverville itself. Wonderful vibe. Good evening. Warm spring air on the front porch. Delicious HUGE pizza, and some appropriate music to accompany a beer. Very nice one indeed. Probably my best memory itself of Weaverville.

I love these buildings. The style. Reminds me of wild west - except it's not. Just going through the Bat Cave area if I recall correct. Does this style of building have a name? It captures something of a very old feel. Love it. I captured this as we went through in the car.

The Devil's Head at Chimney Rock State Park
Well, when you've got a rock so entitled and an interest in folklore references in the landscape, you can't escape a visit to such a feature a this.
A large boulder sits on a ledge overlooking the valley; it carries some anthropomorphic features but for some reason (as often is in the US, UK and European countries) is ascribed to The Devil. Why should The Devil have all the interesting rocks?
You have to go right to the top of the stairs at Chimney Rock to get a good view of this diabolical pareidolia.

Happy Independence Day
Boom! It was great being in the USA for Independence Day. I can't quite remember how it worked, but some States (or counties) selling fireworks is illegal. So, if you have a neighbouring State where it is legal, then just over the State Line you get fireworks being sold BIG TIME! When we were here late on 3rd July, pick up trucks were being filled up with fireworks of all description. We obtained a few to contribute for the next night. It was Redneck Mania for explosives, though! I'd hate to have been in one of those pick up trucks if there'd been a wreck.

Does Facebook 'See Things' too?
![]() |
| A Ghostly Face? |
At The Crewe Heritage Centre I had a customer take this photograph (enlarged for perspective) in the North Signal Box. My brain definetly recognises a very distinct face with numerous features. I think "wow! it's really something!". Then I think "Hang on, there's a zig-zaggy light trail to the left. This is just the brain interpreting something vague and fuzzy as a face".
This is known technically as a pareidolia. A fascinating phenomenon, but quite natural. Disappointingly explains away many hoped for paranormal piccies.
Is this a picture of a spirit or entity hanging around the signal box? Or something quite rational? There's a choice to be made - a choice of "What will I believe?". You can try sitting on the fence, which is my most adopted posture, but believe you me, it's not the most comfortable. I also frequently find myself slipping off the fence more on to one side than the other, before jumping back up on the fence. I want to believe, but...

| Faint face in (front of?) the curtain |
Following a recent event in a pub, when I uploaded the pics to Facebook, it prompted me "Who's in These Photos?". Among them was a faint face either in, or in front of the curtain. Love it! But is Facebook using the same kind of criteria for face detection as humans, but with it being driven by computer software, it's even more obsessive and accurate about it than we are?
I'm quite a sucker for cemeteries too. Reviewing some older photos of mine of cemeteries in Edinburgh, I popped them up for a few friends to see. This was the first time I'd noticed Facebook asking to tag a face which actually wasn't there.
Besides the depictions of Memento Mori, Cherubs, Angels, Abraham Lincoln (yes, really - albeit pre-Vampire hunter days), there is a small face apparent over a gravestone carving. I've got other examples which Facebook has flagged up to me, but these remain the best to show at the resolution generated.
What do you think? Do you have any good strange faces and likenesses to share which might be paranormal or pareidolial?

More than a Fender Bender
Heading down to Chimney Rock, we had several minutes queueing in traffic. As we edged closer, a haulage truck had overturned, shedding its load of gravel. One of those moments when you are thankful for not being too close to an accident. I think this was the I40.

Jack of the Wood, Asheville
Some Downtown Asheville. And about time too. Several hours later after a drive back to Asheville and a Cherokee Circle, it was time for Jack of the Wood on Patton Ave.This was my favourite pub, and about as close as I had to a regular while Stateside. Brilliant pub, often live music, themed on a romanticised US perception of celtic culture, but very homely for it. Good ale too. Bumped into a few folk here who had been walking the Appalachian Way. Good vibes, good memories.
While writing this I just had the realisation that an additional 'f' in "Jack of the Wood" substantially alters its meaning. Ooer.
The pub's website is here.

Well, hello up there!
While belaying below and communing with the rock, some moments communing with the rockface above were had too. Is this a common practice for climbers? Spock did say in Star Trek IV to "become one with the rock". Sunshine, blue sky and ancient granite. Wonderful. Just remember to do your job, or someone could get hurt!

Looking Glass Rock Vibes
Well, a few hours later we'd arrived around the backside of Looking Glass Rock for a hike and for me to belay while some rock climbing was done. Brand new experience for me, and stuff climbing for me... feet on terra firma, please!
I don't know about tree hugging, but being in contact with the rock was good. A mass of 390 million year old granite mountain which would have become a volcano had it not cooled prematurely. A place of connecting with the ground beneath and in front. Understandably popular with rock climbers, then.

Sliding Rock, Pisgah National Forest
This is Sliding Rock. Not that anyone was sliding down it when we visited, but on hot sunny days, that's what do. Go sliding down (shorts needed, else too much skin gets left behind... ) and then splosh into the pool beneath the rock. Great fun, I'm sure.Without any sliding, I got a buzz here. It's a peaceful spot (at least when quiet), and worth getting a bit of a zen buzz here.

This day was a day for hiking and rock climbing. Destination: Looking Glass Rock - just centre right in this picture. This place looks so vast - and it's only a tiny part of the Pisgah National Forest.

The Thing about Knobs
Now this entry could come across as immature and rude, but you have to understand how names and words have different references in different cultures and places.
This is up on the Blue Ridge Parkway and we're about to enter Ferrin Knob Tunnel. In the UK "Knob" is playground (schoolyard) slang for 'penis'. So, when looking at maps and Google Earth for the USA, especially these hilly and mountainous areas, there are lots of knobs named. Green Knob, Ferrin Knob, and yes, there is a Big Knob somewhere.
The added humour here is this Knob Tunnel... I hope I don't need to explain how that could be interpreted!

Skull on the Wall
For me, there's something so American about this skull on the wall. I don't really know what. Perhaps its because its large (America is large, especially in comparison with Li'l' Ol' England) and reflects native species of buffalo. Perhaps. Impressive specimen though and I'd really like one!

Turkey Time!
I've never seen wild turkey before! Probably the only time I've seen turkeys are at Christmas, on TV, or on packaged dead cold turkey in supermarkets.
The sight of the male turkey seeking to impress the female was quite something, and they seemed to have no regard for being on the road on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Nothing like seeing nature in action, even if they really are turkeys!

Blue Ridge Sunrise
I'd heard of the Blue Ridge Parkway, and of the Blue Ridge Mountains (of Virginia) - but didn't know they stretched so far. Amazing, amazing, amazing. Unless you've seen them, been there, you just can't grasp the scale and distance. Aside from the Grand Canyon, it's the most emotional impact a place has had on me. There will be many more pictures from the Blue Ridge Parkway and Mountains. Powerful place.
So, here we are. 6:45am on 15th April, an overcast morning and watching the sun appear as much as it will, before the trees have come into leaf. Special time of day.

Hot Tubs in Hot Springs
Fancy a dip in geothermally heated mineral water? Here at Hot Springs (and verily, yea, that is the name of the place), there are hot tubs you can rent by the hour (and likely longer). Magic. Warm, invigorating. Oxymoronically, it's the perfect place to chill. This remains my first and last encounter of bathing in water heated directly by Mother Earth herself. Churches Churches Everywhere
American churches have a particular style of architecture on the whole. Well, I should say church buildings, because (of course) 'church' actually refers to the body of people which uses a building. In places they cluster along stretches of the roadside advertising the particularly flavour of faith like the restaurants and fast food joints offering their own palate of particular dishes. Much of the time it boils down to personal taste and previous experience as to which you do (or do not) choose. This church is between Chimney Rock and Asheville.

This is a little bit naughty...
The picture is Chimney Rock itself. An enormous towering rock column, with a rim around the uppermost rounded part. Impressive natural formation indeed. Our walk picked out a route around and under it, in places. In a later conversation a dear old lady from Virginia would refer to it as "Chimney Cock". Now that's being a little bit naughty, sweet dear, but I get what you mean.

The Mountains in the Mist
Ever seen Gorillas in the Mist? Me neither. Ever seen Mountains in the Mist? Beautiful. Well that's what I got when I had my first visit to Chimney Rock. This is a walkway having just come up in a long elevator trip. Skeletal tree limbs was about all I could see for the first twenty minutes. Thankfully the conditions did improve for us to see a lot more.

I'm the Firestarter
Lake Lure looked really beautiful. Lots of lakeside activities and fun. Forget Dirty Dancing though. What pleased me most was finding out it was one of the locations for the film Firestarter with a very young but post ET Drew Barrymore. Based on the Stephen King book about a girl with pyrokinetic abilities hunted down by secretive units with the American government. Also has a soundtrack by my most favourite group, Tangerine Dream. So in that nerdish way my inner fan had been delighted to see a beautiful place which related to fiction I read when I was growing up and music I listened to. Nice one.

Burger Time at Lake Lure
Mistiness clung to the mountains and hunger dogged our tummies, so a quick review of the options at Lake Lure, and we ended up at the Beachside Grill. Burger and Fries it was. Delicious. I was informed this lake was the setting for the original Dirty Dancing film. I've never seen, even though I grew up in the 80s. Lake Lure had even more siginificance for me from another film.

Walk in Thunderous Woods
In Batcave, an exploration up the eastern side of the valley was had. Wasn't even sure if the Batcave actually existed (though the name does rather suggest it, doesn't it?). Nevertheless, in torrential rain and booming thunder, we eked our way up for half an hour or so. The mistiness, tree limbs and pretty blossom made it feel like the veil between our world and the fairy realm had been rent asunder. Magical. Vibes I like. It wasn't the last walk in the thunder I was to have in the USA in 2009. Thunder rumbles gave way to tummy rumbles, so time to go in quest of a mythical burger at Lake Lure.

Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na BATCAVE!
Hey, I lost a day somewhere! What happened to the 13th April? Well, here I am at Batcave. Awesome place name. Cool place name. It shows I also did eventually arrive in North Carolina. Having gone through jetlag and slept and chilled a lot, we headed out to Batcave, Chimney Rock and Lake Lure area. A cheesey tourist photo next to the sign was obligatory. One of my kids is also batty about bats, so this had to be done for her, too.

The Road is Long
Wow. This was taken on my second day in the USA. I'd been awake since 2am, and engaging with my first dance with jetlag. A strange sensation. The road seemed very long. And on the wrong side, but hey, I was getting used to it. Though tired, experiences were etching into my mind with an uncanny clarity. I guess courtesy of so many photographs it's hard to forget now.
This was near Table Rock along the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway in South Carolina. I could never have expected it would be so gorgeous, and this was only a starter.

...Central 7, Easley 6. Yeah it's just a sign. But when it's a sign in another country, there's a whole different road culture and way of relating to the land going on here. This was actually en route from somewhere in South Carolina to Asheville. I guess someone will eventually tell me exactly where this was taken. It would be easy to extrapolate the location from the distances on the sign, but I hope someone will get in touch and say "Hey!".

Meetings with Dawgs
Besides trees, I met a fair few dogs (or dawgs as many good folk I met would call them). I love dogs; they can be really good company. They can be a pain in the arse, too - but usually good company. This one was a jumpy little fella and would rarely come when called. Usually run off in the other direction, bless him. I think his name was Sonny, and was probably the dawg I saw the most.

Meetings with Trees
I love trees, and I met a remarkable few trees in my time in the USA. Don't know the species, just know they were amazing. Here's the first memorable tree, under South Carolina Blue Sky. Is this a Black Walnut Tree?

Happy Easter!
Now I'm not sure what I believe at the moment, but this is good. Communion outside on an Easter Sunday morning. Sunrise. Fire. Perfect. I become aware of God far more easily in places like this than in structures which celebrate and elevate human creativity. Which is amazing and needs celebrating, but if I am to connect with something greater than people, this is the place to do it.
My first Sunday in the USA. I've had a burger, been to Wal*Mart and Waffle House, listened to Garth Brooks. Now I've been to church. I guess my immersion in American culture is well and truly under way.
This is the last time I've taken communion too. Beautiful and special. A group of folk I'd never met before (apart from two) welcomed me, and we had communion at sunrise in this outstandingly beautiful place. Thankyou Pendleton Presbyterian Church.

American Dawn
Still at Lake Hartwell, South Carolina. Dawn grows. It went on for what seemed hours. Whisps of mist, subtle changes in hue. Moments you couldn't get out of. Not that you'd want to, either. New day, new country. Easter Sunday too. Lots of symbolism going on here.

American Moonlight
This was my first taste of American Moonlight. Yeah, yeah I know it's the same moon as in England - BUT - the moon in The South here seemed to shine more brightly, more magically. Amazing.
This is down at Lake Hartwell, South Carolina. As we entered the area a racoon cleared the road. Waiting at this shoreline near dawn, coyotes could be heard. Well, that's what I was told they were. So magic. Unforgettable moments here. The feelings and vibes still tingle on my skin.
